The 12 Skills of Mindfulness-Based Ecotherapy

About MBE

The 12 skills of Mindfulness-Based Ecotherapy (MBE) provide a framework for developing greater awareness, acceptance, balance, connection, and authenticity through mindfulness and intentional engagement with the natural world. Together, these skills guide people from present-moment awareness and embodied experience toward deeper connection with nature, others, and themselves, ultimately supporting a way of living that is more intentional, values-based, and aligned with the True Self.

  1. Mindful Awareness — Developing an open, nonjudgmental awareness of thoughts, emotions, sensations, and the environment as they arise.
  2. Living in the Now — Focusing attention on present-moment experience rather than becoming preoccupied with the past or future.
  3. Letting Go — Releasing attachment to thoughts, emotions, expectations, and experiences that cannot be controlled or changed.
  4. Radical Acceptance — Fully acknowledging reality as it is, including difficult thoughts, feelings, and circumstances, without unnecessary resistance or avoidance.
  5. Embodied Mindfulness — Bringing mindful awareness into the body by noticing physical sensations, movement, breathing, and other embodied experiences.
  6. Centering — Returning to a grounded, balanced state when thoughts, emotions, or circumstances pull attention away from the present.
  7. Connecting — Cultivating meaningful connections with oneself, other people, and the natural world.
  8. Nature as Metaphor — Using patterns, images, and processes in nature as metaphors for understanding personal experiences, relationships, and psychological processes.
  9. Nature as Teacher — Learning from direct observation of nature’s patterns, cycles, relationships, adaptation, and change.
  10. Nature as Nurture — Experiencing nature as a source of nourishment, restoration, comfort, and support for emotional and psychological well-being.
  11. Nature as Healer — Intentionally engaging with nature and nature-based practices as resources that can support healing, growth, resilience, and transformation.
  12. Living in True Self — Cultivating an authentic way of being that reflects one’s deepest values, awareness, connection, and sense of purpose.
