Course Description: Ecotherapy for Therapists
Ecotherapy for Therapists is a practical continuing education course designed to help clinicians integrate nature-based practices into psychotherapy while also deepening their own self-care and resilience. Grounded in evidence-informed practice, the course explores the foundations of ecotherapy, the therapeutic benefits of mindful connection with the natural world, and concrete ways to incorporate nature into clinical work with diverse populations. Participants will learn how nature can support emotional regulation, reduce stress, enhance mindfulness, and create meaning, mindful embodiment, and connection in the healing process.
The course also addresses some of the ethical, cultural, and practical considerations involved in bringing ecotherapy into professional practice, including accessibility, informed consent, scope of practice, and adapting interventions for different settings and client needs. Through case examples, experiential exercises, and clinically relevant applications, therapists will gain both conceptual understanding and practical tools for using ecotherapy with clients while also cultivating a more grounded, restorative relationship with nature in their own lives and work.

- Describe a rationale for the use of ecotherapy in therapeutic settings

- Discuss Nature Deficit Disorder as proposed in the book, Last Child in the Woods by Louv
- Describe some of the research into Nature as Nurture
- Discuss some research in Nature and Child Development
- Discuss the Eco-Educative Model proposed by Pedretti-Burls (2007)
- Discuss how ecotherapy facilitates mindful states
- Discuss ecotherapy for treating addiction
- Discuss ecotherapy for treating trauma
- Describe and discuss some ethical issues of ecotherapy
- Name some colleges that offer ecotherapy programs
- Discuss some future directions for ecotherapy
